MY GAME!!

I am fine with all the controls and stuff of scratch, but still what i dont understand is how to 'broadcast' something properly. Sometimes I do it right but I dont know how I did it. Broadcasting is not hard but if you dont get it, it can be a bit hard.

MY GAME!!

In my game now ...I was working on getting the score and sound right which was hard. I asked for sir's help and then we figured out the right thing. Now my game has sound and correct score. It is completed properly till level 2. Level 3 is nearly finished it just needs some thing such as sound and if the player gets hit then to go to game over screen.

MY GAME!

I started my game 2 weeks ago, in the beginning it was really confusing and hard to make my game, I had this idea of making a game similar to 'super mario', I wanted to make 'Save the princess' but it was too hard to make, all the scripts and sprites were hard to make. So I did not go along with that idea and thought of another easier idea, which I am working on now. The name of my new game is Fruited...it may change later...This program 'Scratch' is easy to use once you know how to use it, but if you dont know how to use it, it can be hard.

THE CHALLENGES:

Challenge 1...This challenge was not so hard to do it was pretty easy.

Challenge 2...This was the easiest challenge out of all of them.

Challenge 3...This challenge was not so hard it took a bit of time to workout but overall it was easy.

Challenge 4...This challenge took a while to figure out like how to do it...but once i figured out it was really easy.

Challenge 5...This was not hard because most of the instructions were in the challenge script.

I did 8 scratch examples, through those examples I learnt a lot about Scratch and how to use it. I learnt how to make animations on scratch, I learnt a lot about how to move the characters, how to change costumes and add sound. I also leant about the things we can do using Scratch like make animations, games etc. After doing those examples I am now clear on how to use scratch and make a good game.

The sequence if block will give us a choice while the forever block will allow us to repeat the process.After building it in scratch, the cartoon character moved where you clicked your mouse.

After building this on scratch what happeend was that the cartoon character went where ever i pointed at the mouse, and with the second bit after touching the cartoon character it made a sound 'got you'.

It is talking about temperature.
        1. Start
        2. Read Temperature
        3. If it is less than 32 than print 'below freezing'
        4. If it is more than 32 than print 'above freezing'.
        5. After all that end.


It is talking about One Second Response to a Switch.
  1. Start
  2. Then check if the switch is on.
  3. If it is not on go back to start.
  4. If it is on then turn the LED on.
  5. Then start timer.
  6. Check if 1 second is expired.
  7. If it hasnt then go back to start timer.
  8. If it has then turn the LED off.
  9. After that reset the timer.
  10. After that is done end.

Computer Algorithms

Definitions:
1. Algorithms:
A step by step problem solving procedure, also an established recursive computiational procedure for solving a problem in a finite number of steps.
2. Pseudocode:
The steps we would take to solve a problem.
3. Machine Language:
It is a system of instructions and data effected directly by a computer's central processing unit.
4. High Level Computer Language:
A programming language with strong abstraction from the details of the computer. It can be read by multiple computers and operating systems.
5. Flowchart:
It is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as boces of various kinds and their order is connected by using arrows. It is helpful to solve programming problems if it is put in a flowchart.
All of these relate to the control structure of a program.
6. Sequence:
Where you do the items in the sequence listed.
7. Selection:
A control function that allows us to have multiple options.
8. Repetition:
That allows some lines of code to be executed many times.
Opening a door and entering a room:
  1. Turn the door knob and walk in.
  2. If door knob doesnt open easily try to push or pull harder maybe the door is jammed.
  3. If it still doesnt open check if the door is locked.
  4. Look for a key to open the door.
  5. After turning the key if the door still doesnt open maybe the door knob is broken then call locksmith for help.
Negotiating traffic lights as you drive down a street:
  1. If the light is green just drive pass it.
  2. If it just turned amber, drive pass it.
  3. If it has been amber for a long time slow down or stop because it may turn red.
  4. If the light is red then stop and wait for it to turn green.

Wireless Broadband:
Wireless is a new technology that provides high-speed wireless internet and data network access over a wide area. Examples of wireless broadband providers are: Optus, 3, Telstra, Dodo, I-primus etc. The cost varies depending on your plan, if it is a 1GB plan it’ll be $13 or If the is a 12GB plan then it’ll be $79, so the cost varies depending on your plan and GB. The data transfer at speed of two megabytes for second. Some advantages of wireless broadband are that it gives a really fast broadband speed, you can use it on cell phones, and other mobiles and it is very much affordable. Some disadvantages of wireless broadband would be it is a bit difficult to set up, there is a risk of outsiders accessing you network if don’t secure it properly, sometimes it can considerably slower than a wired network because the wireless connection may not get to where you computer/laptop is easily.

Cable Broadband:
Cable internet is a form of broadband internet access which requires cable to get connected to the internet. It is only available to people who have a cable service in the area. Examples of connection providers are Optus, Telstra, i-Primus and Bigpond. The prices vary from plan to plan, GB to GB. If your usage is 1 GB, you would be pay around $13/month or if it is 12GB then $79/month. The connection speed is 100 times faster than dialup connection, you can download stuff in seconds/minutes, it doesn’t affect the phone line- internet and landline can work at the same time, the internet connection is always on. There aren’t many disadvantages of cable internet but some are, monthly fees, security risk, may not be available in rural or remote areas.

DATA COMPRESSION!!

What is data compression?
It is the process of encoding information using less bits than an unencoded.

What is a data compression ratio?
It is also known as compression power, data compression is a computer-science term used to quantify the reduction in data-representation size produced by a data compression alogirthm.

Why is data compression an important technique for the online world?
It is important because, it helps compress data so it can be downloaded or uploaded to anything or from anything.

What is the difference betweeen Lossy and Lossless data compression?
Lossless data compression uses data compression algorithms which allow the exact original data to be recreated from the compressed data, where as Lossy data retrieves data that may be different form the original one but it is still 'close enough' which is useful in some way.

Which method offers the greatest compression ratio?
Lossless because through that method, none of the information is lost it compresses the exact data.

Why is human psychology and perception an important factor in method of Lossy compression?
An important factor is that it allows us to get rid of data we dont notice. For example: certain high frequency of sounds.

Name Lossy file formats for audio, still image and video format.
There are heaps of formats, names of some are; Mp3, JPEG, Mpeg.

RSS Feed!!

Definition of RSS Feeds?
RSS  stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is also called web feeds. It is a content delivery vehicle. RSS is the format used when you want to syndicate news and other web content. When the content is distributed it is called a feed.

What goes in the feed?
You can either have a partial feed or a full feed. A partial weeb wil include headlines, a short summary of the content and a link back to the place where the content resides. Through a partial web you can encourage your readers to click and the read the full article. But there is also the full feed which means that the whole article comes into their newsreader and they dont have to go back to the website at all to get you content.

What can a feed do for you?
It does different things for content recipient and for a website publisher/company. For the content recipient the internet provides us with an access to information at the touch of a keyboard. However it has an awesome amount of information. The get can get updated, and they make it east to keep this flow of information.
For a website published it keeps your audience updated constantly. Feed keeps you in communication with your audience. It is the ultimate content delivery vehicle. News is the perfect content for a feed. For ages 18-54 old age year group internet is the number 1 choice news. Journalists use the internet to reasearch stories. You can update your product news regularly. If the headlines are flashy, chances are they'll quickly open it and read it.

How are feeds different from e-mail?
It is different from e-mail because it is a much secure delivery method. It has a 100% delivery rate, whereas e-mail only has 34%. Emails have heaps of spams and RSS has no spam. You can unsubscribe with a click of a button.

How do people read feeds?
To reciceve a RSS feed you need a newsreaded or content aggregator. There are Web-based readers like Bloglines and My Yahoo. Newsreaders are downloadable and you can install them easily on your desktop, an example would be the PRESSfeed reader, an easy newsreader which can be downloaded easily. Others may include NewsGator, they are avaliable free and paid. Newsreaders have a variety of special features, like combining several related feeds in to a single view, hiding items that you have already seen and categorizing.

How do you find the feeds you want to subscribe to?
They get picked up and published by other websites. Feeds are gainign the attention of the other search engines. Most of the time it come up high in a keyword search and we dont even know we are reading feed content. Feed search engines and blog search engines are everywhere on the net. As people are finding out about feeds they now often look for the little oranfe and gray icons that illustrate that the content is avaliable in a feed. Icon usually says RSS oe XML or simply web feed.

Broadband and Bandwidth!

What is broadband? Broadband Internet access, is usually just shortened to broadbad.
It is a high data rate internet access, typically contrasted with dial-up access using a 56k modem.


What units are used to measure bandwidth?
Bandwidth is usually measured in bits and bytes. A byte is 8 bits.


How much faster is broadband than dial up?
Broadband is atleast four times faster than a dial-up. But usually it is much much faster than dial-up.


What are the speeds that broadband operates at compared to dial up?
Broadband is often called 'high-speed' access to the interent, it is usually 256 kbits/s (0.256 Mbit/s) or even greater whereas dial-up only has a speed of 56 kbit/s.

What are some of the advantages of using a broadband connection to download something like a video compared to dial up?
Some advantages of using a broadband connection to downloading something is,  it works up to 100 times faster than dial-up conenction. You can download things in seconds or minutes instead of hours. The internet connection is always on so it is not like the download will be interepted.

Australian Bureau of Statistics:

A] How many people subscribed to the internet in 2007? How many of these were for business use? How many for home use?
Around 7925 people subscribed  to the internet in 2007 and 1295 were for business use and 6629 for home use.

B] Look at the access technoloogies heading. How many more people using broadband since 2005?
Out of the 4.7 million households around 48% had broadban internet access. This grew during the year and it almost doubled with 2.3 million households using broadband internet access.

1. What is the speed of the connection from your computer to the Sydney location on the map?
The speed connection from our computer to the Sydney location is 0.30 Mb/s (upload).

2. What is the speed of the connection from your computer to the U.S location on the map?
The speed of the connection from our computer to U.S. location is 0.20Mb/s (upload).

3. Why did the data transfer rates vary?
It varies because it takes longer to go all the way to the U.S. whereas for Sydney, its in the same country.

Today we tried to see if it works out, Abuk taught Julie some dance steps on the song say ah...It was hard but Julie and Abuk still tried. It didnt work very well so we will have another next lesson.

New Terms relating to audio files

Stereo:   It is a system for reproducing stereophonic sound.

Channel: A path over which electrical signals can pass.

Track: A distinct selection of music from a recording or a compact disc.

Frequency: The number of times a particular type of music or sound occurs.

Hertz: The unit of frequency; one hertz has a periodic interval of one second.

Decibel: It is a logarithmic unit of measurement that expresses the magnitude of a physcial quantity to a specified reference level.

WAV: It is short for Waveform Audio File Format, WAV is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing an audio bitstream on PCs.
mp3: It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage,also a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players.
aiff: Short for Audio Interchange File Format, it is an audio filr format standard used for storing sound data on personal computers and other electronic audio devices.

Introduction to video!

1. The video format we will be using this term is Digital Video, what is the other, older format that was used recently.
Older format of video that was used recently is analog video.

2. Describe the difference between the two formats
The difference between the two formats are that analog technologies record waveforms as they are, while digital technologies convert analog waveforms into sets of numbers, recording the numbers instead.

3. What are some advantages of digital video.
Some advantages of digital video are: learning as moving pictures and sound is more effective than stills. The footage can be updated or changed with ease. They add a whole new dimension to presentation since it can be easily incorporated into computer presentations. Network capabilities, presentations can be distributed rather easily.

4. What is meant by frame rate in video
Frame rate is the number of frames or images that are displayed per second. When a series of pictures is shown to us-humans,  the pictures get shown like an animation instead of different images. That is what frame rate is meant in video.

5. Do all applications use the same frame rate, explain your answer
The higher the number of frames playing per second, the smoother the video playback appears to the user. Lower rates result in a choppy playback. As a reference point, film uses 24 frames per second to allow the viewer to perceive smooth playback.

6. What is meant by resolution, how is it measured.
It is an idea that continues to baffle even graphic artists. In terms of framework of editing photos, resolution is a measurement of the output quality of an image. The units used to measure resolution are units such as: PPI (pixels per inch), DPI (dots per inch), LPI (lines per inch), and SPI (samples per inch).

7. What is the colour system called RGB
Red, Green, Blue. These are the prime colours used to make all other colours. Its name RGB came from additive primary colour. 

8. Explain the video standards PAL, NTSC, and SECAM, what are the main differences between them.
PAL: Is short for Phase Alternate Line, it is an anlogue television encoding system used in broadcast television systems in large parts of the world.
NTSC: It is named for the National Television System Committee and it is also an analog television system mostly used in North America, South America, Burma, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Pacific island nations and territories.
SECAM: It is the french for Sequential Colour with Memory, it is an analog colour television system first used in France.
The main difference between the three is that they are all used in different countries. Another difference is the number of frames per second.

9. Which standard do we use in Australia?
In Australia we use PAL.

10. For what type of video camera would you need to have a Video Capture Card in your computer to download video?
For an analog camera we would need to have a video capture care in our computer to download the video.

11. Why don’t we need a video capture card for the video we will be doing at school.
We dont need a video capture card for the videos we will be doing at school because we will be using digital cameras and mobiles which easily connect to the computer by a cord.

12. What is an IEEE 1394 port
It is a port for connecting devices to your personal computer.

13. Why do digital video cameras use video compression
Video compressions are used to reduce the size of the data in digitized frame or series of frames fo a video/audio. So that it is easier to transfer or send.

14. Describe what a codec is.
Codec is a technical term for compression/decompression. It also stands for compressor/decompressor and codec/decode. All these mean the same thing. A codec is a computer program that shrinks large files and makes them suitable for you computer.

15. What is meant by generation loss, where does it happen?
Generation loss is when the quality and potential increase of file size between subsquent copies of data are loss. Anything that reduces the quality of represtation when copying can be considered a form of generation loss. It is mostly in analog systems, even with the best equipment; generation loss does occur.

but Julie found it too boring...so we are not doing this idea, even though it was a great idea in my opinion by Julie didnt like it..so we will think of some other idea...:D

What to look for in a camera phone?

In a camera phone megapixels arent everything, they are only half the story. There six main thing which make a best quality camera.
1). AutoFocus:
It makes the camera focus on your subect perfectly and helps to avoid blurred shots. If the photo you are taking is going to be actually used for something then you need autofocus. In this case megapixels do not matter, if your phone doesnt have autofocus, the photos will look terrible. It'll be suprising to see how many camera phones dont have autofocus so just dont assume make sure your phone does.


2). Dual LED or Xenon flash:
Seeing that most photos from a camera phone are taken in low light conditions i.e. parties, clubs etc, a high quality flash is essential. Standard LED just wont work, because they throw out less light than your camera's screen. The best type of flash Xenon, it produces a much brighter burst of light, which helps your camera phone take great photos even in the dark. But the weakness of Xenon is that it wastes battery to quickly and it takes time to reset. In between the two types of flashes is the Dual LED flash. It is twice as better as normal LED flash  but 1/1000th that of Xenon. It has the advantage of being able to run continuosly so it can be used for videos and still photos. It's alot cheaper than Xenon.  


3). White Balance, Exposure, and Preset Scene Modes:
If you prefer to take pictures out in the sun, you would need a camera phone that will let you tweak white balance or exposure settings becuase if it doesnt than over exposed shots will tend to look completely washed out. Make sure you that least your camera phone includes the cloudy, sunny, incandescent and fluorescent settings.


4). Image stabilization:
Image stabilization is needed if you do not want the photos that are blurred. Camera phones produce poor results if they are placed on a tripod or the camera taker i.e. They would rarely produce a good pic...The result of you taking a picture would be a shaky hand taking blurry pics.
Image Stabilization cant prevent blurred pics completely, but it can do a great job in the minimizing the blur. If you want good photos check that your camera phone has image stabilization in the specs.


5). Mobile Gizmos!
A camera pjhone is not just a camera it is also a phone, so that means you can upload your pic to different sharing sites as well as social network sites such as Facebook. Your camera phone to be able to be a great phone it should include:
Fast Internet Conenction. Wifi and 3G.
Built-in support for image sharing Web sites
An easy to use user interface.
You might also want automatic geo-tagging, so that it can stamp the location you took the pic at, with the time and date it got taken. But this is not a necessary feature, it is only if you need it. Other features that you may want our features such as photo editing, ten to be gimmicky at best- there are alot of thigns you can do on a 3" screen! So these things are hard to get in the one phone, so dont really worry about these. Features you might want and arent easy to get are features such as: red-eye deductio and smile detectition but they are not important.


6). MEGAPIXELS!
Megazpixels were purposely left till last, because people obsess about them too much. A good quality 3 megapixels camera will take way better pictures that a poor quality 8 megapixels camera. If you are looking for good quality pictures you should buy a camera phone with a minimum of 5 megapixels camera. If you plan to buy any smaller your pictures wont be able to capture enough detail. They'll be alright but not great. But if you find a 5 megapixel camera and it doesnt have the five feautures shown about, avoid it!
Going up the scale, 8 megapixels has become more popular in 2009, while Sony Ericsson and Samsung now have 12 megapixel camera phones in the shape of the Sony Ericsson Satio and the Samsung Pixon 12. Both of these phones are pitched as high-end camera phones and so have a wealth of camera-related extras, making either of them excellent choices. Whether you need 12 megapixels, though, depends on what you want to do with your camera phone. If you’re looking for perfect pics, you’d be better get a digital camera. However, the newer 12 megapixel camera phones are at least as good as low end camera phones from a few years ago, so if that’s the level of quality you’re after, then the 12 megapixellers will do you nicely.
The minium set of features you need for a great camera phone are the following:
8 megapixels (5 at a pinch)
auto-focus
image stabilization
a nice range of preset scene modes (and the more manual control you have over exposure and white balance settings, the better)

xenon or dual LED flash
good quality optics
fast Internet connection
easy to use interface

The phone I would want....for my daily use and for a good camera is LG GD900!
It has all the features I need and I want...=]

IMAGE FILE TYPES

IMAGE FILE TYPES:
The most common by far are GIF and JPEG. Both of these encode static bitmap images. Both GIF and JPEG images compress themselves in different ways. In a GIF image, can show up to 256 pixels where as JPEG can show lots more. GIF is mostly used for icons, or littly images whereas JPEG is most used of larger photographs or images. In JPEG file has much more complex techniques to compress images, like the photographs. where the colour of every pixel is different. A GIF can make a perfect reproduction of the the orginal whereas JPEG cant. Animated GIF is a sequence of GIF files all bonded together and showed one after the other. You can get very reliastic animation if you have enough panes. The size of the file is the sum of GIF  files used to create the sequence, and that can add up quickly. An MPEG file uses a complex alogrithm, just like the JPEG file does. It tries to eliminate reduce reptition between frames to significantly compress a video information. MPEG files also alow soundtrack whereas the Animated GIF do not. MPEG files size can get quite large considering the a typical squence has hundreds or thousands of frames. Shockwave provides a vector-bse aninmation capability. A shockwave file specifies the coordinates of shapes such as lines, rectangles, circles etc. as well as the colour. Unlike the other files which specify only the colours of every pixel. Shockwave files can be very small in size unlike the MPEG. They allow animation and sound, the images of it are also scalable because they are vector-based. One great quality of shockwave files is that you can enlarge the image yet it'll look great.

Entry 5: The End!

This was a fun task. Making an animation seemed really hard at the start but it seems no big deal. This assignment was fun and entertaining experience. This is my last post for this project. I hope I have made an good animation, for my house Mercedes. Sketch-star was atlast the best animation site. It made making animation for everyone fairly easy. Thanks to Mr. Cavill who introduced sketchstar to us.

Entry 4: My animation

Since I was doing my animation on Sketchstar there was no format in which my animation was getting saved in. It was just saving on the website and it did not mention which image format it was using.  I was aiming for half-a-second per frame, but it ended being less than that. The final size was six seconds and 29 frames. The animation has been completed and already posted to my blog, enjoy!

Entry 3: My animation process

I started to do my original animation today. My creation process was:
1). I looked for backgrounds and finally chose an under the sea background.
2).I copied the background to around 15-16 frames.
3). Then I chose an creature that lives under the sea. It was a dolphin.
4). At the first I thought of ideas as to what to do with that background and the creature.
5). Than I  thought of writing EAT! in all the other house colours except Mercedes. So then frame by fram I did that.
6). After that I slowly moved the dolphin towards the EAT! and frame by frame the dolphin completely ate the EAT!
7). As the dolphin was moving a Mercedes letter was slowly forming as if the dolphin was trying to overtake the other houses and showing Mercedes. This was also done frame by frame.
And that is how I made my animation! It was not all done in one lesson since first I made an unneat one and then a original one. =]

Entry 2: For my animation

After many tries and random experiments on making a Mercedes animation, I still did not know what to do. I started looking for other animation programs because I thought miniclip did not have enough things to make my animation. It had enough but we would have to be a member of it which was costing money. So I wasted a whole lesson looking for other animation sites. I looked at flux time animations, but it would not save your animation and it was hard to operate. I looked at animation.com but that just explained how to make an animation and for making an animation you had to be member which costed money. I looked at many other websites but none of them were good. So I came back to miniclip sketch star. The first try that I was to finalise was that the back ground would on the moon and the rocket is going over the moon and the steam coming of it will say Mercedes. I had a go trying that but it did not work out because steam looked messy because it was not real steam blue coloured and it did not look original. So I left that idea and went to another one. It was related to under the sea. I kept to that idea and worked on it for the rest of the days. And at the end that was my original idea. :)

Entry 1: For my animation

I started off using pencil for my animation, but I did not know how to make an animation in pencil. So then later we got introduced to Sketch Star on miniclip. It was really a helpful site for making animations; it had objects, puppets, creatures and backgrounds that we were able to use. It made making an animation fairly easy. So then I used Sketch Star for making my animation. The complications I had were that I did not know what kind of animation I should do or make. Some of the ideas were: having a balloon blast and than that saying Mercedes, another one was having a girl blow the balloon and leave it and the air coming out would say Mercedes. But after a lot of experiments I still wasn’t able to make an animation like that. =]

olympic rings...

I made this on paint.net...i had problems at the start making this but once i understood what to do it was really easy....you just had to make circles on top of each other thats all...whereas i was finiding ways to bring the circle under one another and over..it was a easyy task.. :))

Bit: It is the smallest possible unit of digital information, because it can only have two values- 0 and 1.
Byte: A name for a bunch of 8 bits. Its the memory capacity of a personal computer. 


Q4). What is a 'sampling rate'?
It defines the number of samples per second taken from countinous signal to make a discrete signal.





Q5). How does Colour Depth or bit depth effect the appearance of an image? Find some images to illustrate the effect?
Colour depth makes the image look more realistic. The more colours used to make the image the better it will look.



Q6). Colour depth effects both still and video digital media. Sampling rate only effects video but not still media. Can you explain.
